Tissue engineering of intervertebral discs

Summary

Degenerative disc disease (DDD) is one of the most prevalent causes of debilitating back pain. Aside from costly and invasive surgery, treating DDD represents a major unmet medical need. Our proposal is designed to treat DDD by restoring disc height and integrity through the administration of stem cells encapsulated in a specially designed, temperature sensitive, injectable matrix which attains robust mechanical properties at body temperature.
