MEDTEQ, Quebec’s consortium for research and innovation in medical technologies

Officially launched in January 2013 with the financial support of the Ministère de l’Enseignement supérieur, de la Recherche, de la Science et de la Technologie (MESRST), MEDTEQ’s members include small, medium and large national and multinational companies, public research establishments as well as the five University Health Centres in Quebec and their networks. Close to 90 organisations now focus on the development of innovative world class medical technologies and solutions, demonstrating Quebec’s leadership and know-how in this regard.

The ageing of the population, the rise in chronic diseases and the shift towards outpatient care services represent key growth factors driving new markets for innovative products in the medical technology industry. In addition, the economic crisis and its effects on health budgets as well as a growing number of social innovation projects across the world are supporting a profound transformation of the health care continuum.

The medical technology industry in Quebec represents over 10 000 jobs and includes over 200 companies, 125 of which having operations based in Quebec. In addition, many other sectors are complementary to this industry, notably nanotechnology and ITC that together develop more and more applications with links to the domain.

The industry has been growing at an annual average rate of 9.1% over the last decade.

After four years of preparation, MEDTEQ is launched!
