Project Summary
There are limited options for patients with metastatic disease and immunotherapies have failed to work. The Alpha DaRT seeds offer the first opportunity for a radiation-based therapy device that has the potential to awaken the body’s immune response. We aim to provide evidence that this treatment option may: 1. elicit an immunological response, thus through treatment of a single liver metastasis, there will be reduction in metastases throughout the remaining liver. This may reduce the risk of future metastases from arising. 2. Allow for the synergistic effect between the DaRT and immunotherapy, which could further improve oncologic outcomes. To achieve this, we are proposing a small study in patients to test the body’s response to the treatment. Secondly, we will use animal models that mimic the human metastatic disease to assess if DaRT will work together with immunotherapy in improving the killing of the tumor. The work proposed in this study has the potential to offer patients alternative treatment options and potentially stimulate an immune response such that immunotherapies can also become an option.
