Swiftsure Innovations was founded by a critical care nurse, Deanne McCarthy, RN. As a nurse practitioner, she became frustrated by the lack of tools for fast, safe and clinically effective oral care. She decided to found her own company, Swiftsure Innovations, to bring the SwishKit to market.

The SwishKit is the only device that enables safe rinsing and suctioning in the oral cavity of mechanically ventilated patients.

Gray Oncology Solutions has a vision of a healthcare ecosystem without wasted resources. In pursuit of this vision, they have developed an “operating system” that simplifies cancer treatment by standardizing workflows between multiple points along the cancer pathway (GrayOS). Operationally, this translates into the optimization and automation of patient scheduling while explicitly incorporating the complex multidisciplinary workflow, resulting in improved access to care, reduced patient waiting times, increased patient/staff satisfaction and, ultimately, superior patient care.

arbutus medical

Arbutus Medical develops innovative surgical drill technology and sterile orthopedic procedure kits that save hospitals time and money. The company is currently focusing on improving the standard of care for bedside skeletal traction surgery in trauma centre emergency departments with its TrakPak® product. Arbutus Medical’s products have received regulatory approval from the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and Health Canada, and have been used by customers in 40 countries, enabling around 85,000 surgical procedures to date.

sonic incytes

Sonic’s flagship product is a portable ultrasound scanner that integrates live ultrasound imaging, enabling assessment of liver stiffness and attenuation, which are surrogates for fibrosis and fat. The company markets quantitative ultrasound for non-invasive diagnostic applications at the point of care, with the Velacur product, which targets fatty liver disease. With liver disease becoming increasingly prevalent, a more accessible medical device like Velacur can be a good option for care earlier in the patient journey.

Innovere Medical has developed Innovision™, a device that provides patients with visual entertainment and advanced sound quality to produce an immersive experience while remaining invisible to the MRI scanner. This helps alleviate common discomforts during MRI, such as anxiety and claustrophobia. Innovision™ aims to alleviate anxiety triggers, which will increase the number of patients enrolled and reduce the number of missed scans. A more relaxed patient allows for a more accurate diagnosis, leading to better care plans.

mimosa

MIMOSA Diagnostics is a mobile healthcare platform that analyzes tissue oxygenation and blood flow to enable early assessment of foot ulcers. The company focuses on the prevention and monitoring of diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) and the amputations they can cause. However, most existing solutions are in the post-injury space rather than the pre-injury space. MIMOSA’s diagnostic technology could save healthcare systems substantial costs and give diabetic patients peace of mind.

MIMs (My Intelligent Machines) helps pharmaceutical, biotech and agri-tech companies analyze a staggering amount of genomic, clinical, phenotypic and environmental metadata. It also helps them leverage systems biology and machine learning to develop more efficient, personalized and environmentally friendly medical and agricultural practices. My01 manufactures a digital medical device that helps diagnose acute compartment syndrome (ALS), a condition that usually follows trauma to an overworked muscle. ALS occurs when the rise in intramuscular pressure exceeds the blood pressure in the surrounding tissues, and impedes the vascularization of the affected muscles.

nanology labs

Nanology Labs is developing a new thernaostic agent (contrast agent for MRI) that enables tumours to be detected at an early stage using MRI. At the same time, it sensitizes cancer cells, improving radiotherapy results and enabling a fivefold increase in patient life expectancy and a 40% cure rate after irradiation.

reveal

Reveal Surgical is developing a device for real-time intraoperative cancer detection (virtual biopsy), based on Raman spectroscopy. The intraoperative probe system relies on the unique signature of light scattering that occurs when light is used to illuminate different types of tissue. This innovative, non-invasive approach to cancer detection will provide surgeons with submillimetre precision on tissue characterization to help them make decisions while integrating seamlessly into their workflow.

optina

Optina has developed a hyperspectral camera combined with artificial intelligence-based technology that analyzes images of the retina to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease. The camera captures 92 images per second taken at different wavelengths, revealing subtle phenotypic changes that may be linked to various medical conditions. Optina’s non-invasive early detection technology will be easily accessible to the general public, take much less time than current solutions and cost a fraction of the price. Detecting the primary biomarkers of Alzheimer’s disease (amyloid) will be key to accelerating clinical research to find a cure.

rna diagnostics

RNA Diagnostics has developed the RNA Disruption Assay (RDA) to assess the response of cancer patients to chemotherapy and other anti-cancer treatments. The RDA can assess response within 2-3 weeks of starting treatment, compared with the current standard of 4-6 months. rRNA disruption is a biomarker of impending cell death. If anticancer drugs are effective, rRNA will be strongly disrupted. If anticancer drugs are not effective, rRNA will be intact. It therefore provides doctors with an objective approach to optimizing and individualizing cancer treatment. Detecting non-response to treatment will also enable healthcare payers to avoid the costs of inadequate treatment.

SeamlessMD provides the leading digital patient engagement platform for hospitals and health systems to engage, track and stay connected with patients across care pathways. The solution helps patients and providers track a patient’s progress throughout their episode of care across different sectors by accessing digital care plans on their smartphone, tablet or computer to achieve better outcomes.  The Seamless platform has been clinically proven to significantly reduce readmissions (-72%), length of stay (-2 days) and emergency room visits (-47%). This means that healthcare professionals save hundreds of hours per month, and the cost per patient is reduced by around $2,300. Spring Loaded has developed an exclusive technology for “active” (bionic) knee braces that incorporates a new miniaturized energy storage and restitution mechanism using liquid matrix springs. Integrating this technology into the conventional design of “passive” knee braces results in a brace capable of improving leg strength and power by storing energy when you bend the knee and releasing that energy when you straighten the leg. Spring Loaded solutions can reduce the risk of knee injury, mainly for athletes, and can speed up the return to “normal” activities after injury and provide increased mobility and quality of life in osteoarthritis.

Thorasys offers portable, easy-to-use devices for point-of-care pulmonary function diagnostics, providing clinically relevant information on patients ranging from infants to the elderly, and in environments ranging from pulmonary function testing (PFT) laboratories to doctors’ surgeries and ultimately patients’ homes.

spinologics

Spino Modulation has designed the MIScoli™ system, an innovative vertebral body fixation (VBT) device to treat scoliosis in young adolescents. The focus is on idiopathic scoliosis (scoliosis of unknown cause), to reduce the deformity and prevent its worsening in growing children/adolescents. The MIScoli™ system has the potential to lead to shorter hospital stays, less restrictive on growth and mobility and no long-term pain.

haleo

HALEO has developed a highly effective, patented intervention for chronic insomnia that uses a brief version of cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT I) delivered via a mobile app. Patients use HALEO’s mobile platform to meet weekly with a licensed therapist with specific training and expertise in the treatment of chronic insomnia.
